Washington contractor license records

These records come from L&I, Washington's labor and industries department. Its records also carry credentials that have expired, been re-licensed under a new number, or gone out of business; this directory publishes the ACTIVE records, plus the SUSPENDED records labeled as suspended. Expired and superseded records are held out of the current directory.

Source: Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) — records as of November 3, 2026. Records change; the board’s own L&I Verify a Contractor is the current source.

Licensed or registered — two different credentials

Washington runs two different credentials through L&I, and this site always uses L&I's own word for them. Construction contractors are REGISTERED: registration records the business with the state together with its bond and insurance. Electrical, plumbing, and elevator contractors are LICENSED: a license is the state credential for those trades. A registration is not a license, and this site never prints it as one.

Registered is not licensed

Most Washington construction contractors hold a registration, not a license. Registration means the business is on file with L&I with a bond and insurance recorded. It is not a state examination or a skills credential. Electrical, plumbing, and elevator work is the licensed tier.

A suspension line in L&I's data is not a discipline finding

L&I's records include suspension entries that are licensing-workflow milestones. Discipline — infractions and citations — is published by L&I separately and is not part of these records, so no record on this site presents a suspension entry as a disciplinary action.

Records the board lists as SUSPENDED: 9,600 suspended records → — published with their recorded status, never presented as current.

What if there is no record?

A name or number missing from these pages is not in L&I's ACTIVE or SUSPENDED contractor records as of November 3, 2026. It may be expired, re-licensed under a new number, recorded under a different name. Absence here is a statement about these records — not about any business's right to do any particular work.

To check the board’s live records, use L&I Verify a Contractor. If the board’s records should contain a record that is missing here, tell us — corrections are answered within two business days.
